Facilities & Engineering Capability

Richmond Defence Systems’ headquarters in Norfolk brings together engineering, manufacturing, testing, and product development within a single integrated facility.

This vertically integrated approach allows our team to design, prototype, test, and refine specialist EOD equipment rapidly while maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.

By combining engineering expertise with operational insight, we ensure that every system we produce is practical, robust, and suited to real-world explosive ordnance disposal environments.

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

Our engineering team develops specialist equipment for explosive ordnance disposal and counter-IED operations. Using advanced computer-aided design (CAD) systems and virtual modelling tools, engineers can rapidly evaluate new concepts and refine existing designs.

Prototyping capabilities within the facility, including additive manufacturing and electronics development workstations, allow ideas to move quickly from concept to physical testing.

Close collaboration between engineering, manufacturing, and operational specialists ensures that designs remain focused on real-world usability as well as technical performance.

We have a large suite of design studios for Computer Aided Design (CAD) and virtual modelling, and electronics and mechanical workstations for product development and prototyping.

Research, Testing & Validation

Rigorous testing is essential to ensure that EOD equipment performs reliably in demanding operational environments.

Richmond’s facility includes a dedicated underground test range that allows controlled firing and evaluation of disruptor systems and neutralisation equipment. High-speed video analysis enables engineers to study device performance in detail, helping to refine designs and demonstrate functionality to end users.

In addition to internal evaluation, products are submitted to recognised external organisations for independent testing and certification where required.

Manufacturing & Assembly

A key advantage of Richmond Defence Systems is our ability to manufacture equipment in-house. From raw material through to final assembly, the majority of production processes take place within our facility.

Our workshops include CNC turning and milling centres, EDM machining capability, electronics assembly areas, and specialist cartridge loading facilities. This integrated approach allows us to maintain tight quality control while ensuring that products meet the exacting standards required for operational use.

By keeping production close to engineering and testing teams, improvements and refinements can be implemented rapidly.

Cartridge Loading

We are also equipped with an external facility for our Cartridge loading. This building is fully approved by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and provides a safe environment for the RDS team to manufacture cartridges away from the main site.

Continuous Innovation

As explosive threats evolve, so too must the tools used to address them. Richmond Defence Systems continues to invest in research, engineering capability, and testing infrastructure to support the next generation of EOD equipment.

By combining advanced manufacturing, rigorous testing, and close collaboration with customers, we aim to deliver reliable solutions that enhance safety and effectiveness in the field.
