Marking the 80th Anniversary of VE Day at Richmond

Updated: May 9

On May 8th, Richmond employees came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day - the historic moment in 1945 that marked the end of World War II in Europe. Known as Victory in Europe Day, it remains a poignant date for many across the UK and Europe, a time to reflect on the sacrifices made and the peace that followed.

At midday, our team at Richmond HQ observed a respectful silence to honour the courage and lives lost during the war. With around 15 colleagues gathered, it was a quiet, personal moment of reflection, as individuals took time to think about loved ones and ancestors who experienced the war first-hand.

To celebrate in the spirit of the original VE Day street parties, we recreated a modest, traditional gathering - a nod to how communities might have come together spontaneously in 1945. A classic foldaway table, paper tablecloth, and wartime tunes from legends like Vera Lynn set the tone. It was an atmosphere rich in both nostalgia and gratitude.

Our talented team also brought in an array of homemade treats. From classic scones served with whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and raspberry jam to hearty sausage rolls and cheese and onion pasties - the spread was as comforting as it was delicious. A large ceramic teapot poured plenty of brews throughout the afternoon, while traditional English ginger wine, ale, and a touch of sherry added to the authentic period feel.

One standout of the day was a gorgeous Union Flag–inspired cake made by Carly Bright - a beloved baker here at Richmond - who even dressed for the occasion. Her patriotic bake quickly became the centrepiece of the table and a conversation starter among colleagues reminiscing about their grandparents' wartime stories.

The gathering was small, heartfelt, and deeply appreciated. It was a moment to pause not only in remembrance, but also in community — sharing stories, food, and reflections that connected us to a shared past and to each other.

Lest we forget.
