Chris Hawthorne, our Training Manager, recently spent a day in the Swiss hills, conducting a training session for Swiss EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) operators on the use of the CSL 50-40 Vulkan M2 Disruptor/De-Armer. While we can’t take credit for the weather, it certainly added a memorable element to the day’s activities.

The session began with a thorough introduction to the contents of the Peli case and the assembly of the Vulkan M2 in its various configurations. The system comes with three barrels: a 40mm rifled barrel, a choked water barrel, and a 1" de-armer barrel—each of which serves a distinct purpose depending on the nature of the threat faced by the operator.
We then discussed the projectiles and consumables available to the operators, focusing on how to assess the threat in front of them and select the best solution for the job. The primary goal, of course, is always to ensure public safety, and the CSL 50-40 Vulkan M2 is designed with operator safety at the forefront. When used correctly, it is an effective and reliable tool in explosive hazard mitigation.
As we always say: “Every step away from danger, survivability increases.”
The Swiss operators proved to be a highly skilled and dedicated group. They were quick to grasp the training, keen to learn, and demonstrated a real commitment to their roles. We were pleased to see their enthusiasm for the material and their ongoing desire to refine their skills.

One of the highlights of the day was when we mounted the Vulkan M2 on the 525 and successfully fired a precise shot from the 30mm barrel, hitting the target exactly as intended. This was made possible by the excellent soft and hardware provided by ELP from Germany. We also appreciated the collaboration with Arnd J. Lemhoefer from compositionX GmbH, whose expertise proved invaluable throughout the training.
A special thank you to Adrian Schmitter from Armasuisse, who organised the training and ensured that all equipment was prepared and ready for use. His attention to detail extended even to the coffee machine on the range, which—powered by a small generator—provided a welcome boost during the day’s activities.
We would also like to thank Christopher Brandt and his colleague, Nepomuk, for their assistance as interpreters. Their support was crucial, although at times, they had to remind Chris to listen for the English version of the questions instead of the German one!
Finally, our thanks go to the Swiss operators for their excellent performance with both the 40mm and water barrels. Selecting the right barrel and consumables for the target is a critical skill—and the operators demonstrated their proficiency in this area.

We look forward to the next training session and the opportunity to continue supporting EOD operators with the tools and training they need to carry out their important work safely and effectively.
“Keep making the right choices.”
